BENTLEY has made sporting lifestyle clothing for ladies and gentlemen since 1962.
British sporting lifestyle clothing was born in Victorian and Edwardian times as the gentry sought clothing appropriate for their new leisurely pursuits. Lawn tennis, cricket, rugby, golf, were all nurtured and developed in Great Britain in that era. We at BENTLEY take great pride in Britain’s sporting heritage.
With the financial means to engage in leisure activities, the gentry sought to enjoy the thriving British sporting events and pastimes. Ladies and gentlemen joined cricket clubs, tennis clubs, rugby clubs, where they enjoyed games from pavilions, and dressed in their new “sportswear”. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was
founded at Wimbledon in 1868 and established the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament; the Lawn Tennis Association was founded in
1888; the first rugby rules were written by pupils of Rugby School in Warwickshire; the first cricket County Championship was established at Lord’s, the “Home of Cricket”; the world’s first golf Open Championship was held in Scotland, the “Home of Golf” and home to many of the world’s most prestigious golf courses, not least The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, the world governing body for the game; England established the world’s first football league and the first football competition in the FA Cup.
Fashions have changed. BENTLEY was born, not in Victorian times but in 1960’s Swinging London, an era synonymous with fashion and optimism. Our style is for modern times. BENTLEY’s birth year, 1962, is the year Rod Laver won at Wimbledon; Arnold Palmer won the British Open; Yorkshire won the cricket County Championship; the British Lions toured South Africa winning 16 of 25 matches, and the famous, wonderful Barbarians played Canada in Gosforth, Newcastle. The decade saw England win the football World Cup; Great Britain win the Rugby League World Cup; the first regular rugby Tests with southern hemisphere teams began, as did Wales’ Golden Age in rugby; the Imperial Cricket Conference became the International Cricket Conference, thereby opening cricket up to the whole world; an all British Wimbledon final saw Angela Mortimer Barratt defeat Christine Truman Janes to win the Ladies’ Singles; Muhammad Ali win Olympic gold in 1960, but floored two years later by Henry Cooper.
You may ask about our clothing quality. BENTLEY garments are all British designed. We only manufacture where expertise and craftsmanship is excellent. Our garments have been made in Britain, in Italy, and more widely when the quality is of the finest standard.
Established in London near the old Wembley Stadium, probably the most iconic football stadium in the world, our headquarters were moved in the 1990’s to Manchester, Britain’s historic textile capital, where our wider fashion group also manufactured garments, and sometimes designed, for other British luxury fashion houses – Burberry, Aquascutum, Gieves & Hawkes etc., and also created luxury British countrywear sold in Harrods, Farlows of Pall Mall and Barneys New York. BENTLEY clothing is not mass-market. We prefer to offer quality garments, with a degree of exclusivity. We hope you too share our ethos.
